The future of Cambodia rests in the skills and abilities of our children. Given the global pandemic and its effects on the world economy, it is easy to take our eyes off the prize. As adults, we must not forget that our very survival depends on how we prepare for tomorrow.
When Global Education Vision first came to Cambodia, we opened our initial campus under the name "American Global Academy." Our first group of students consisted of 20 kids from the surrounding community. Since then, we've expanded substantially and relocated to a new building and changed the school name to "American Global Prep School." At first we had a vision of providing a quality education, and that has always been our mission, but we added to that the urgency to prepare our students for the best universities in the world. If the Cambodian children are going to take their place on the world stage, and they will, we have to send them to the top universities. That means they have to learn foreign languages, excel at math, science and reading and have excellent academic marks prior to applying to college. AGPS is preparing them to do just that, and so much more.
After building our first school in Phnom Penh, after taking those first steps, our founder expanded his vision to reach all of Cambodia. A few tours of remote, rural schools showed the vast need that exists throughout the country. Not only is there a need to rescue schools that are in dire need of rebuilding, re-staffing and re-supplying of basic resources, but also, some communities have no school at all and need one built from the ground up.
To build or rescue 300 schools throughout the country seems like a huge task, a journey of a thousand miles walking, if you will, but having set out on this path, we realize it is more than doable. The only effective way we found is to network with others and to enlist their support. To date, donors have given more than $370,000 dollars towards our journey, but realistically we have a very long road ahead. Your choice, if you are reading this, is to sit back and watch... or step in and show your support. How much you help, how much you give, will be totally up to you. There is a somewhat funny quote that asks: what is the best way to eat an elephant? When I first heard that, the concept of it seemed overwhelming. How would such a thing even be possible? The answer proved to be not only understandable but something we could apply in this situation.
In our case, the first bite was to build a successful world-class school in Phnom Penh. Now that we have this one running, the next step is to identify communities throughout Cambodia that need urgent attention in the area of education.
Things happen. Certainly, this school didn't quite go the way the founders had planned. That's were we come in. We call this a "School Rescue" and we have already started.
As you can see, the facilities need some serious attention. Beyond classroom repair and repainting, we also need to address the air conditioning, plumbing and roofing.
Much work needs to go into all the common areas throughout the school. Fortunately, our team has become very skilled at doing what needs to be done.
In truth, we see so much potential here and it inspires us to know that we can be a part of reshaping a cornerstone of these children's future in Cambodia.
Of course, we can't do this alone. We need you. Any small amount you can help with, when added to the donations of others, will add up to a big difference. We invite you to become a part of Cambodia's future on the world stage and hope to welcome you to our family very soon.
